The Gowanus Canal , once a important industrial link in Brooklyn, has evolved into a barrier. The steady decline in its industrial use has opened up possibilities for rethinking its use. The project suggests a gradual phasing of a master plan in which the goal is to physically transform the canal into a usable and activated park space. Pedestrian links are created between neighborhoods and new institutional, commercial, and New Industry (based on science and technology) developments are introduced. The relationships between the different typologies are explored in the ways they relate to each other and to the gradually remediating canal, and much of the program, such as the institution to study and aid in the canal’s remediation, responds to the physical needs of the site.
