The city of New Haven has a corridor known as the “Arts District” which at present has no museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. This design is for a Kunsthalle with a program focused on contemporary art through its galleries and educational plus other multipurpose facilities. The aim of this project was to be both an extension of a path that is a connection with the Arts District and a destination itself. The new path continues the urban and Arts District concept of viewing different programs as one moves along a trajectory, with the opportunity to engage in them being sometimes direct and sometimes only visual. This new path extension is then concentrated into a continuous circuit on the site that enters on the second level through a sloped courtyard/outdoor theater space, circulates through galleries down to the first, then one below grade, where it exits onto a perpendicular street. The ground rises to meet and become the building; later in its circuit the building raises back up over the ground, then down below it, yet always as a continuation of it as well.
